Position Summary:

We are seeking a Director, Data Engineering to lead and scale Ensemble’s Data Engineering organization based in India. This role is responsible for driving execution excellence, platform reliability, and people leadership for a data engineering organization of 40+ engineers. The Director will partner closely with global product, platform, analytics, and AI/ML stakeholders to deliver high-quality, governed, and scalable data platforms built on Azure and Databricks.


What You’ll Do:

Strategy & Platform Ownership

    Define and execute the data engineering roadmap aligned with business and platform priorities.
    Own architecture and evolution of the Azure + Databricks lakehouse platform.
    Establish standard patterns, frameworks, and paved paths for ingestion, transformation, and consumption.
    Balance innovation with platform stability, cost efficiency, and scalability.

Engineering Execution & Delivery
    Own end-to-end delivery of data engineering commitments across multiple teams and pods.
    Drive predictable delivery, capacity planning, and dependency management.
    Ensure production readiness, operational SLAs, incident response, and continuous improvement.
    Lead cost optimization and performance tuning across Databricks workloads.

Governance, Quality & Security
    Establish strong data quality, pipeline monitoring, and reliability practices.
    Implement governance-by-design including access control, data masking, and lineage.
    Ensure compliance and secure handling of enterprise and client data.

People Leadership & Talent
    Lead and grow a 40+ member data engineering organization.
    Manage and develop Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, and senior engineers.
    Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning.
    Build a culture of accountability, ownership, and engineering excellence.

Stakeholder Collaboration
    Partner with product, analytics, AI/ML, and platform leaders to align priorities.
    Communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to senior leadership.
    Translate business needs into scalable technical execution.


Required Skills:
    15+ years of experience in data engineering or data platform engineering.
    6+ years of experience leading large, multi-team engineering organizations (30+ engineers).
    Proven experience managing managers and senior technical leaders.
    Deep hands-on experience with Azure and Databricks in production environments.
    Strong understanding of data governance, quality, and operational best practices.
    Strong architectural thinking and ability to drive design for cross-team systems.
    Exceptional written and verbal communication with the ability to influence without authority.
